Cubs Edge Pirates 3-2, DarkHorse Backing Goes Down Swinging

The Cubs squeaked out a 3-2 road win at PNC Park, and our Pirates -120 pick goes into the loss column. So much for that 6.83 runs-per-game home mashing we leaned on—Pittsburgh's bats went ice-cold when it mattered, managing just two runs against Matthew Boyd and the Cubs' bullpen. Boyd wasn't spectacular, but he didn't have to be; he kept the Pirates off-balance enough to let Chicago's offense do just enough damage.

We liked Jared Jones's strikeout upside and the home-field edge, and while Jones held his own, the Pirates couldn't capitalize on the modest pitching advantage we projected. The Cubs, supposedly dragging from back-to-back games and a rough road split, looked fresher than the numbers suggested. Sometimes fatigue is real, sometimes it's a narrative—today it was the latter.

Credit where it's due: Chicago's defense made the plays, their bullpen locked it down late, and they turned a coin-flip game into a gutsy road win. The Pirates' home offense, so potent on paper, never showed up. That's baseball—one team finds a way, the other doesn't. We backed the wrong horse, but the reasoning was sound. Onto the next card.
