Meanwhile, JP Sears—the guy we basically called a batting practice pitcher at 4.38 ERA—cruised through Miami's anemic offense like he was channeling prime Maddux. The Padres built their lead methodically and never looked back, turning those vaunted Marlins home splits into a punchline.

The market moved toward Miami before first pitch, "sharp money" supposedly recognizing the pitching mismatch. Turns out the only thing sharp about this game was how quickly the Padres carved up Pérez. When you're riding an eleven-game skid, no amount of K/9 ratio or WHIP differential saves you from getting boat-raced at home.
