Atlanta United limp into Audi Field looking for goals that just won't come

Saturday night in the nation's capital sets up as a slog between two teams allergic to putting the ball in the net. Atlanta United arrive nursing a brutal 8.9-goal deficit against their expected output — the kind of finishing futility that gets strikers benched and coaches fired. D.C. United aren't much better, sitting 5.4 goals below their xG profile and averaging a pathetic 0.8 tallies per game over their last five outings.

These two already played out a scoreless snoozer back in March, and nothing in the underlying numbers suggests we're due for a goal fest in the rematch. D.C. generates about 1.56 expected goals per match, Atlanta roughly 1.46 — you do the math, and it lands right around three combined. Problem is, neither side can finish their dinner, let alone their chances.

Atlanta's slightly better recent form (1.6 goals per game over five) still leaves them well short of lighting up the scoreboard, and D.C.'s attack has been downright anemic at home. The DarkHorse model likes the under 3.0 goals at +120, and it's hard to argue. When two teams this bad at scoring meet, you ride the under and hope both benches remembered to pack their sleeping bags. Expect another low-event grind that tests your patience more than the keepers.
