49ers Grind Out 23-17 Win as Offenses Sputter in Santa Clara
The Commanders fell 23-17 to the 49ers in a game that played nothing like the shootout we expected. DarkHorse's over 52.0 crashed and burned spectacularly, missing by a dozen points as both offenses looked more like they were operating on four days' rest instead of eight.
San Francisco's vaunted 30.8 points-per-game attack managed just 23 against a Washington defense that usually bleeds points like a sieve. The Commanders' 139.6 rushing yards per game were supposed to create that pace-up dynamic and keep chains moving — instead, they managed just 17 points against a 49ers defense that's been generous all season. Where was the production-vs-defense mismatch we were promised?
The sharp money that pushed this total from 50.5 to 52.0 got absolutely cooked. Both teams looked sluggish despite the extra rest, and what should have been a track meet turned into a defensive slog. San Francisco did enough to win at home, but barely. The 40-point combined output was a gut punch for over backers who watched two offenses with legitimate firepower suddenly forget how to move the football. Sometimes the sharp money isn't so sharp after all.
