Angels Pitching Duel Goes South as Cardinals Escape with 1-0 Shutout

MLB

Well, that's baseball for you. We backed the Angels at -134, banking on Reid Detmers' strikeout arsenal and home-field momentum to carry Anaheim past a Cardinals squad we figured would struggle to score. Instead, we got a pitcher's duel that went sideways in the worst possible way—a 1-0 Cardinals victory that leaves our pick in the loss column.

Detmers did his part, keeping St. Louis mostly silent, but Hunter Dobbins and the Cardinals pitching staff flipped the script entirely. Despite Dobbins' pedestrian 1.39 WHIP coming in, he and the bullpen locked down the Angels' lineup—including Mike Trout and company—for nine innings of near-total futility. One run. That's all the Cardinals needed, and they got it.

The Angels' three-game win streak? Dead. Their 2-0 season series edge? Irrelevant when you can't push a single run across. We thought the pitching matchup and momentum favored Anaheim at that price, and on paper it still should have. But baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheets when bats go cold. Credit St. Louis for executing a road shutout, but this one stings. Sometimes the better side on paper just doesn't show up—and that's exactly what happened in Anaheim.
