Bears Escape Patriots in 54-Point Thursday Night Shootout
So much for Thursday night defense. The Bears outlasted the Patriots 30-24 in a game that sailed over 50.5 and made our under call look foolish from the opening quarter. Turns out limited prep time didn't slow anyone down—it just meant both offenses feasted on tired, sloppy defenses that couldn't adjust.
Drake Maye shredded Chicago's supposedly elite home defense for multiple touchdowns despite that compromised offensive line we worried about. The Patriots' 24 points more than doubled their 15.0 road average, and New England moved the ball with surprising efficiency given the short week. Meanwhile, the Bears' offense—which we expected to play it safe—put up 30 at Soldier Field and never let New England settle in defensively.
The game turned into exactly the kind of back-and-forth track meet that Thursday night unders are supposed to prevent. Both teams were gassed, sure, but that cut both ways: offenses found soft spots in exhausted secondaries, and neither defensive coordinator had answers on four days rest. Chicago held on late, but this one was decided by who had the ball last, not by the defensive slugfest we projected. Sometimes the short week hurts the defense more than the offense. Lesson learned—painfully—at 54 combined points.
