Braves Blank Nats 9-0, Bury Our +1.5 Value Play in the Dirt

MLB

So much for momentum. The Nationals strutted into this one riding a two-game win streak and fresh off a 9-5 drubbing of these same Braves, and we liked them at +1.5 because the pitching matchup was dead even and Atlanta had looked shaky on the road. Then Grant Holmes decided to rewrite the script—five shutout innings, minimal damage—and the Braves offense remembered how to hit a baseball. They hung nine runs on Brad Lord and the Washington bullpen, turning our "near-even matchup" into a laugher.

The final score was 9-0, which means our Nationals +1.5 got torched by seven and a half runs. Ouch. Lord's 3.75 ERA looked great on paper; in practice, he got shelled. Washington's bats, so lively 24 hours earlier, went silent. Atlanta snapped their two-game skid in the most emphatic way possible, and that poor away run differential we cited? Irrelevant when you score nine and allow zero.

Sometimes the numbers lie. Sometimes a team just shows up. The Braves did. The Nats didn't. We took the value side and got run over. Tip your cap, dust off, move on. That's baseball.
