Braves Squeeze Past Nats 5-4 as Holmes Justifies the Faith

MLB

The Braves edged Washington 5-4 in a nail-biter that validated every word of our pre-game analysis. Grant Holmes delivered exactly what we projected—5.1 innings of two-run ball—while Jake Irvin's return from the IL went about as smoothly as a flat tire on I-85. The righty coughed up four earned runs in 4.2 frames, his shoulder rust showing in a third-inning meltdown that spotted Atlanta the cushion it needed.

Matt Olson did Matt Olson things, driving in two and reminding everyone why that .870 OPS makes him the most reliable bat in this lineup. The Nationals clawed back late, manufacturing a pair of runs in the eighth to make things interesting, but Atlanta's bullpen—anchored by that sparkling 3.71 team ERA we highlighted—slammed the door when it mattered.

Our Braves -146 cashed comfortably, and the math held up beautifully. Holmes outpitched Irvin by more than a run per nine, Atlanta's home-field advantage flexed, and the 62-63% true win probability we calculated proved conservative if anything. Washington showed heart, but class won out. Sometimes the sharp side is just the right side, and tonight we rode the better roster to a clean winner. On to the next.
