Brewers and Dodgers Are the Real Deal—But Watch That Cubs Offense

MLB

The Brewers sit atop the standings at 81-50, and the numbers say they've earned every bit of it. That +1.2 net rating leads the majors, built on a 5.0 offense paired with the league's stingiest 3.7 defense. Milwaukee isn't smoke and mirrors—they're the complete package. Right behind them, the Dodgers match that 5.0 offensive output with a 3.9 defensive mark of their own. These two are in a different stratosphere, and bettors should treat them accordingly down the stretch.

The Rays at 77-53 look solid on paper, but that +0.3 net rating screams regression candidate. They're winning games without the underlying dominance you'd expect from a team five games over .600. Compare that to the Cubs at 75-56, who boast a 5.2 offensive rating—best in baseball—yet somehow trail Tampa Bay in the standings. Chicago's 4.3 defensive mark is the weak link, but that offense is nuclear. I'll take the Cubs' upside over Tampa's tightrope act any day.

The Yankees and Red Sox both sit at +0.8 net ratings with identical 3.7 and 3.8 defensive numbers, respectively. New York's two-game edge in the standings feels about right. Meanwhile, the Phillies at 73-58 are living dangerously with a +0.2 net rating that suggests they're more .520 team than .557.

Down in the basement, don't sleep on Detroit at 61-69. That +0.6 net rating is the highest of any sub-.500 club, and their 4.0 defense is legitimately good. The Tigers are better than their record—maybe not playoff-bound, but dangerous if you're laying heavy chalk against them. Conversely, the Athletics and Rockies are exactly as bad as advertised, with defensive ratings north of 5.8. Fade them with confidence.
