Capitals Cash the Goalie Advantage as Thompson Slams the Door
The Capitals took care of business at home with a 4-2 victory over the Devils, and DarkHorse's Capitals -120 pick cashed exactly as scripted. Logan Thompson was the difference-maker we projected, turning aside the Devils attack while Jake Allen's shaky road form continued to haunt New Jersey.
Washington jumped ahead early and never trailed, building cushion that allowed Thompson to operate with a lead — always the sweet spot for a goalie finding his rhythm. The Capitals' home offense showed up as advertised, potting four goals to exploit Allen's .885 save percentage that screamed vulnerability from the jump. New Jersey managed two tallies but couldn't generate the sustained pressure needed to crack Thompson's .904 form, which looked even better under the Capital One Arena lights.
This one played out like a textbook goaltending mismatch. When you've got a near-20-point edge in save percentage and home ice working in your favor, funny things stop happening. The Devils' road defensive woes — surrendering five per game coming in — didn't magically disappear, and Washington capitalized on every opening Allen gave them.
The market saw a coin flip at -120. We saw a goalie gap the size of the Potomac. Caps delivered, Thompson stood tall, and the cash register rang. Sometimes hockey's simpler than the odds suggest.
