Cardinals Pitching Makes DarkHorse Eat Crow in 7-3 Rout

MLB

Well, that ERA gap we loved so much? Turns out numbers on paper don't mean squat when your guy can't find the zone. The Cardinals dismantled the White Sox 7-3 at Busch Stadium, making our -115 play on Chicago look foolish from the jump.

Matthew Liberatore, the guy we faded hard with his 5.57 ERA, apparently didn't get the memo. He carved through a White Sox lineup that was supposed to exploit his weaknesses, while Anthony Kay — our perceived ace in the hole with that shiny 4.47 ERA — got shelled. The 1.10 ERA advantage we harped on? Might as well have been written in disappearing ink.

St. Louis jumped ahead early and never looked back, piling on runs while the White Sox offense sputtered to just three. That "slightly better discipline" we cited evaporated in real game conditions, and the Cardinals' home-field advantage — which we downplayed as a "strongest opposing factor" — turned out to be the actual story.

The market moved toward Chicago, we followed the steam, and we got run over. The back-to-back scheduling concern we mentioned in passing? Should've weighted it heavier. Sometimes the obvious narrative — road-weary team facing a hungry home squad — is obvious for a reason.

Chalk this one up as a humbling reminder that pitcher matchups are just one piece of a much bigger puzzle.
