Cardinals Silence Yankee Stadium, Expose Pitching Advantage That Never Was

MLB

The Cardinals made our Yankees pick look foolish, riding Andre Pallante and their bullpen to a 3-1 upset at Yankee Stadium. So much for that "meaningful starting pitcher advantage" we touted—Pallante carved through New York's lineup while Will Warren got tagged, flipping the script on every metric we leaned on.

St. Louis plated three runs against Warren and the Yankee pen, enough to silence a home crowd that expected better after yesterday's series-opening win. The Cardinals' bats, supposedly the inferior unit at .239, did exactly what they needed while holding the Yankees to a single run. Pallante's 3.72 ERA suddenly looked elite compared to Warren's pedestrian outing, and that vaunted Yankees bullpen depth—the one with the sparkling 3.34 team ERA—failed to bail out their starter.

We banked on New York's recent 5-5 form trumping St. Louis's ugly 3-7 skid, but baseball doesn't care about your last ten games when the other guy's pitcher has better stuff on a given night. The Cardinals proved that surface-level ERA comparisons mean nothing if your starter can't locate, and they cashed as road dogs while we ate the -152 chalk. Tough loss, but that's the game—Pallante was simply better when it mattered.
