Chicago Fire and Red Bull New York Serve Up a Tepid 1-1 Stalemate in Jersey

MLS

Well, that was a letdown. Chicago Fire and Red Bull New York played to a forgettable 1-1 draw at Red Bull Arena, and DarkHorse's over 3.5 call crashed and burned in spectacular fashion. We needed fireworks; we got sparklers.

The math looked bulletproof going in. Chicago's been averaging nearly two goals per game on the road, New York's defense has been leaking like a sieve at 2.1 goals-against per contest, and the Fire rolled in riding a three-game win streak with momentum in their sails. Instead, both sides sleepwalked through ninety minutes of tepid possession and toothless finishing. Two goals total. Not two per team—two combined. Brutal.

Chicago found the net once, New York answered once, and that was your entire scoring summary. No late drama, no defensive meltdowns, no attacking chaos. Just a flat, uninspired slog that somehow defied every underlying metric we threw at it. The Fire's road form evaporated. New York's defensive vulnerabilities took the night off. Sometimes the data screams one direction and the game shrugs and goes the other.

Missed pick, missed entertainment. Onto the next one—hopefully with teams that remember how to finish their chances.
