Chicago Fire Blow Three Leads in Wild 4-4 Draw at BMO Field

MLS

So much for that quality edge. Chicago Fire squandered not one, not two, but three separate leads in a chaotic 4-4 stalemate at Toronto, turning our Fire ML pick into expensive confetti. The numbers said Chicago should cruise—1.942 xG-per-game, rock-solid defense, dominant 6-2-2 form—but somebody forgot to tell Toronto's makeshift squad they were supposed to roll over.

The Fire looked every bit the superior side early, racing ahead multiple times only to watch Toronto's depleted roster—still missing Osorio, Palacio, and Dorsch—claw back with the desperation of a team that had nothing to lose. Every time Chicago thought they'd put this one to bed, Toronto answered. Four goals should win you most road games; instead, the Fire's defense, which supposedly held a massive edge at 1.33 goals-against versus Toronto's 1.73, leaked like a rusty bucket when it mattered.

Credit where it's due: Toronto showed guts. But this result is squarely on Chicago's inability to close. You can't give a struggling side four goals and expect three points. The Fire's offensive firepower was there—four goals proves that—but championship teams don't let inferior opponents hang around. Our pick crashes and burns, and Chicago leaves two points on the table they absolutely should've pocketed.
