Cubs Drop Series Finale as Reds Rally Late for 6-4 Victory

MLB

The Cubs walked into Great American Ball Park laying -135 with Clay Holmes on the bump, banking on his sparkling 2.39 ERA and superior offensive firepower to handle Chase Burns and a struggling Reds lineup. Instead, they're walking out with another road loss and a missed ticket.

Holmes' 0.41 ERA edge over Burns looked great on paper—until it didn't matter. The Reds scratched across six runs against a Cubs staff that couldn't slam the door when it counted, while Chicago's vaunted lineup advantage (team OPS around .74 versus Cincinnati's .60) produced just four runs. That offensive superiority we leaned on? Nowhere to be found when the Reds needed outs.

Cincinnati's home cooking made the difference. The Cubs came in 2-4 on the road, and that mediocrity continued in front of a crowd that smelled blood. Burns wasn't dominant, but he didn't have to be—he just had to keep his team close enough for the Reds' bats to capitalize late.

The handicap was sound: better pitcher, better offense, reasonable price. But baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheet when the home nine decides to show up. Cubs lose 6-4, DarkHorse loses the juice at -135, and we're reminded once again that road mediocrity is a stubborn beast.
