Cubs Edge Blue Jays 3-2 as Peterson Outduels Cease in Wrigley Upset

MLB

Well, that's baseball for you. The Cubs squeaked past the Blue Jays 3-2 at Wrigley, handing DarkHorse a loss on Toronto ML at -116. We backed Dylan Cease and his sparkling 2.41 ERA against David Peterson's bloated 6.09 mark, banking on a nearly four-run ERA gap to carry the day. Turns out Peterson had other plans.

The left-hander didn't suddenly morph into Sandy Koufax, but he did enough to keep Chicago in front while Cease — for all his strikeout wizardry — couldn't deliver the dominant outing we needed. The Cubs manufactured three runs, the Blue Jays managed just two, and that was that. Sometimes the guy with the ugly numbers shows up when it counts, and sometimes elite stuff doesn't translate to runs on the board.

This one stings because the logic was sound: massive pitching edge, fair price, positive expected value. But Peterson's 1.65 WHIP didn't betray him today, and the Cubs' three-game winning streak rolled on to four. Baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheets or your K/9 rates when a struggling starter finds his rhythm for one afternoon.

Chalk it up, move on. The process was right; the result wasn't. That's the game.
