Game Recap

Cubs Edge Pirates 4-3 in North Side Nail-Biter

MLB

The Cubs squeaked past the Pirates 4-3 at Wrigley in a game that came down to the wire, proving once again that divisional baseball in the NL Central is never easy, even when it probably should be. Chicago built just enough cushion early to survive a late Pittsburgh push, holding on by the slimmest of margins as the Bucs made things interesting down the stretch.

This one had all the hallmarks of a classic Cubs-Pirates grinder—solid pitching on both sides, timely hitting when it mattered, and enough drama to keep the Bleacher Bums on their toes through nine. The Pirates showed they're not rolling over for anyone despite their place in the standings, scrapping until the final out. Credit to Pittsburgh's lineup for making Chicago earn every single run.

For the Cubs, a win is a win, especially at home where they need to stack victories if they're serious about staying relevant this season. The bullpen held serve when called upon, which hasn't always been a given at Wrigley lately. As for the Pirates, moral victories don't show up in the standings, but they're proving they can hang with better clubs when the bats wake up. Final tally: Cubs 4, Pirates 3—close enough to taste, not close enough to cash.
