Cubs Fall Short in St. Louis Nail-Biter Despite Offensive Edge

MLB

The Cubs dropped a heartbreaker at Busch Stadium, 3-2, and our Matthew Boyd advantage evaporated faster than a popup in the sun. So much for that 0.78 ERA gap mattering when it counts.

Boyd wasn't terrible, but he wasn't the difference-maker we banked on either. The Cardinals scratched across just enough runs to make Dustin May look like a Cy Young candidate, which tells you everything about how this one unfolded. St. Louis pitching kept Chicago's bats—supposedly rolling at 7.6 runs per game over their last five—completely in check. Two runs? That's not momentum, that's a mirage.

The Cubs had every statistical reason to win this game. Better recent form, superior starting pitching on paper, an offense that should've torched May's 4.59 ERA. Instead, they managed two measly runs and let a Cardinals team that came in 2-8 over their last ten steal one at home. That home field advantage we dismissed? Turns out it still matters when you can't hit.

This is why baseball breaks your heart. The numbers said Cubs, the logic said Cubs, but the scoreboard said Cardinals. We missed, they cashed, and somewhere in St. Louis, the baseball gods are laughing.
