Cubs Outlast Nationals 8-6 in Back-and-Forth Slugfest at Nationals Park

MLB

The Cubs escaped Washington with an 8-6 victory Tuesday night, surviving a late Nationals push in what turned into a proper offensive slugfest. Chicago built their cushion early and held on just enough when it mattered, though this one had more twists than a pretzel factory.

The visitors jumped ahead with timely hitting through the middle innings, stacking runs when the Nationals' pitching staff couldn't find the zone or retire the side cleanly. Washington's bats woke up late, mounting a legitimate threat that had the home crowd believing, but the rally fell two runs short when the final out was recorded.

Neither bullpen covered themselves in glory here—both managers burned through arms trying to navigate high-leverage spots, and both staffs gave up enough hard contact to make their position players nervous. The difference came down to Chicago getting their crooked numbers on the board first and building enough separation to withstand Washington's inevitable counter-punch.

The Nationals showed fight, credit where it's due, but moral victories don't move the needle in the standings. Cubs cash the W, improve their road record, and head to the next series with momentum. Washington's left wondering what might've been if they'd shown up before the seventh inning.
