Diamondbacks Steal One in Boston, Sink DarkHorse Pick 7-6

MLB

So much for that elite strikeout rate. The Red Sox dropped a heartbreaker at Fenway, 7-6, and took our -150 confidence play down with them. Payton Tolle's supposed "meaningful edge" evaporated somewhere between the third and fifth innings as Arizona's bats woke up just enough to outlast Boston's high-octane home offense.

The Red Sox did their part offensively—six runs should cash against Brandon Pfaadt, especially given his pedestrian strikeout rate. But Tolle couldn't deliver the shutdown performance we banked on, and Boston's bullpen let the Diamondbacks claw back into striking distance. Arizona capitalized late, manufacturing the decisive run and holding on through a tense ninth.

This one stings because the thesis wasn't wrong on paper: Tolle's 10.02 K/9 versus Pfaadt's 5.92 should have tilted the game Boston's way, and the Red Sox had been bulldozing Arizona all season. But baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheet when the other team strings together timely hits. The Diamondbacks improved their road resilience, the Red Sox squandered home dominance, and we're left holding a losing ticket. Sometimes the better starter loses. That's why they play nine innings instead of simulating them in a lab. Tough beat, but the process was sound—just didn't cash.
