Dodgers Can't Cash Pitching Edge as Braves Walk Off in Extras, 6-5

MLB

The Paddock swung and missed on this one, and it stings. We backed the Dodgers at -132 on what looked like a slam-dunk pitching mismatch—Roki Sasaki's steady 4.42 ERA against AJ Smith-Shawver fresh off elbow reconstruction and sporting a ghastly 6.23 ERA. The logic was bulletproof: nearly two runs of ERA separation, LA's superior lineup, and a kid making his first start post-surgery. What could go wrong?

Everything, apparently. Smith-Shawver gutted through five innings without imploding, keeping Atlanta within striking distance while Sasaki failed to capitalize on the supposed edge. The Dodgers scratched across five runs and looked poised to validate the pick, but Atlanta's offense—which we knew trailed LA on paper—found another gear when it mattered. The Braves clawed back, forced extras, and delivered the walk-off punch in front of their home crowd to seal the 6-5 win.

That's four straight now for Atlanta over the Dodgers this season, and the home-field advantage we downplayed proved real. Sometimes the better pitcher and better lineup aren't enough when a team has your number. Smith-Shawver didn't need to be great—he just needed to survive, and the Braves' bats did the rest. Tough loss. We move.
