Dodgers Steal One From Wheeler in Philly, 2-1

MLB

So much for that 4.56 ERA gap mattering. The Dodgers walked into Citizens Bank Park and did exactly what great teams do—made Zack Wheeler mortal when it counted. Final score: 2-1, and DarkHorse's Phillies -136 pick goes down as a miss.

Wheeler was everything advertised—dominant stuff, minimal traffic—but baseball's a cruel mistress when you can't push across runs. The Phillies managed just one against a Dodgers staff that's been stingy all season, and suddenly that elite 2.13 ERA doesn't mean squat when your offense goes silent. Los Angeles scratched across two, likely on the kind of opportunistic, small-ball execution that separates October teams from pretenders.

Here's the rub: the handicap wasn't wrong in principle. Wheeler absolutely was the better starter. Eric Lauer's 6.69 ERA suggested batting practice was on the menu. But the Dodgers' superior team pitching depth (3.56 ERA) showed up when it mattered most—probably a lockdown bullpen effort that slammed the door after Lauer's exit.

The market moved from -154 to -136 on Philly, and we jumped on that value. Sometimes the math checks out and the result doesn't. Wheeler did his job. His lineup didn't. That's baseball, and that's a loss.
