Guardians Bludgeon White Sox 9-3, Expose Newcomb's Fraudulent ERA
So much for that "meaningful pitching advantage." Sean Newcomb got absolutely shelled at Guaranteed Rate Field, and the Guardians made our White Sox pick (-120) look foolish in a 9-3 drubbing that wasn't even that close.
Cleveland jumped on Newcomb early and never looked back, torching the lefty who entered with that shiny 3.09 ERA. Turns out ERA is just a number when you're serving up meatballs to a Guardians lineup that clearly didn't care about Chicago's 5-game win streak or 7-3 season series edge. Daniel Espino wasn't brilliant himself, but he didn't need to be—his offense provided more than enough cushion against a White Sox squad that looked nothing like the team that went 8-2 in their previous ten.
The final score flatters Chicago. This was a beatdown from the middle innings onward, with Cleveland piling on insurance runs while the South Siders managed just three consolation tallies. That 1.02 ERA gap we touted? It evaporated faster than a Chicago summer breeze off the lake.
Sometimes the numbers lie, and sometimes a hot team just runs into a buzzsaw. Today was both. The Guardians exposed every flaw in our thesis, and Newcomb's pitching advantage turned out to be fool's gold. Tough loss, no excuses.
