Guardians Drop South Side Slugfest 5-3 as White Sox Bats Punch Back

MLB

The Guardians fell 5-3 on the South Side, sending our -105 pick down in flames despite what looked like a clean pitching edge on paper. Joey Cantillo's modest ERA advantage meant nothing when Chicago's lineup decided to show up for back-to-back games, capitalizing on his 1.47 WHIP tendencies and making him work into trouble. Davis Martin wasn't spectacular by any stretch, but he did enough to keep Cleveland's bats from mounting the sustained pressure needed to overcome an early deficit.

The White Sox jumped ahead and never truly let Cleveland back in it, riding timely hitting and just enough bullpen competence to protect the lead down the stretch. For a team that's been mostly lifeless this season, stringing together consecutive wins feels like a minor miracle—and naturally it comes at our expense.

Cleveland's superior strikeout rate and team ERA looked great in the model but translated to exactly zero runs when it mattered most. The market priced this near even for a reason: divisional road games are coin flips with extra chaos, and banking on marginal starting pitcher advantages in a hitter-friendly park proved foolish. Sometimes the numbers lie, and tonight the South Side reminded us why you can't just plug stats into a formula and print money. Guardians couldn't guard anything.
