Guardians Drop Tight One 4-3 as Twins Flip the Script at Target Field

MLB

So much for that decisive pitching advantage. The Guardians fell 4-3 in Minnesota, and our Espino-over-Prielipp thesis got torched in the process. We rode Cleveland at -112 banking on Daniel Espino's sub-3.00 ERA to overwhelm Connor Prielipp's shaky 5.25 mark, but baseball had other ideas. The Twins scratched across four runs while limiting the Guardians to three, turning what looked like a mismatch on paper into a one-run nail-biter that went the wrong way.

Credit where it's due: Minnesota's home-field edge and ability to manufacture runs proved more valuable than we projected. Prielipp didn't need to be Cy Young—he just had to avoid disaster long enough for the Twins' offense to exploit Cleveland's bullpen or capitalize on timely hitting. The Guardians' vaunted team ERA and strikeout stuff couldn't close the deal when it mattered. That's the rub with pitcher-driven handicaps in tight markets—you need execution, not just résumés.

At 50.5 percent implied, this was always going to be a coin-flip dressed up as an edge. Turns out the coin landed tails. Tough loss, but we'll take our swings when the numbers say so. On to the next.
