Guardians Get Clipped in Baltimore Despite Pitching Edge on Paper

MLB

The Guardians limped out of Camden Yards with a 9-5 loss, turning DarkHorse's -110 pick into expensive confetti. So much for that 0.85 ERA advantage and superior staff metrics—Baltimore's bats didn't read the scouting report.

Cleveland's vaunted pitching staff, supposedly the difference-maker here, got shelled for nine runs by an Orioles lineup that was meant to be reeling from back-to-back fatigue and a dismal 1-5 home record. Turns out fatigue is negotiable when you're teeing off. Foster Griffin's 3.06 ERA looked great in the preview; whatever he brought to the mound Thursday didn't resemble it. Meanwhile, Shane Baz and Baltimore's supposedly porous 4.14 staff ERA held up just fine, limiting the damage while their offense did the heavy lifting.

The Guardians managed five runs—decent output—but their pitching collapsed when it mattered most, surrendering four more than expected against a home team we pegged as vulnerable. Cleveland's road form (4-1 coming in, 5.8 runs per game) evaporated in the Baltimore humidity. Sometimes the numbers lie, and sometimes a team just decides to show up. The Orioles chose violence. We chose wrong. That's baseball, Suzyn.
