Guardians Pitching Edge Evaporates as D-backs Take Series Opener 4-1

MLB

Well, that pitching mismatch we loved? Turns out ERA gaps don't mean squat when your offense forgets how to hold a bat. The Diamondbacks rolled into Cleveland and made Progressive Field look like a spring training complex, taking the opener 4-1 and sending our Guardians -132 pick straight to the shredder.

Tanner Bibee's supposed 2.43 ERA advantage over Mitch Bratt looked great on paper—emphasis on *looked*. Arizona's bats did just enough damage against Cleveland's ace while Bratt and the D-backs' bullpen kept the Guardians lineup in a straitjacket all night. That vaunted home field advantage? Invisible. Cleveland's .71 OPS offense that we acknowledged as "slightly worse" proved exactly that: slightly worse is still bad when you need runs.

Arizona's superior recent form (10-5 in their last fifteen) wasn't just noise—it was a warning sign we downplayed in favor of starting pitcher metrics. The D-backs came in hot, played like it, and made Cleveland look pedestrian in their own building. Sometimes the better team just wins, regardless of what the rotation matchup suggests.

Brutal miss. The 57% implied probability at -132 needed Cleveland's offense to show up. They didn't. Next.
