Game Recap
Guardians Upset Rays 7-3, DarkHorse Pick Crumbles in Tampa
Well, that didn't age well. The Rays entered Friday night with every statistical advantage we could ask for—Rasmussen's sub-3 ERA, a five-game heater, home field dominance, a clean season-series sweep—and promptly face-planted 7-3 against a Guardians squad that refused to read the script.
Cleveland hung seven runs on Tampa Bay, turning our confident -170 play into expensive kindling. The Guardians offense, which we politely ignored while obsessing over ERA differentials, showed up when it mattered. Foster Griffin, the supposed weak link at 3.60 ERA, did enough to keep Cleveland in striking distance while his lineup did the heavy lifting. Meanwhile, Rasmussen's "meaningful pitching edge" evaporated under pressure—turns out playoff baseball doesn't always respect regular-season WHIP.
The 5-game win streak? Snapped. The 7-1 home postseason record? Blemished. The 3-0 season series dominance? Utterly irrelevant when the Guardians decided to actually compete. Sometimes the underdog bites, and tonight Cleveland's bite drew blood. Tampa Bay couldn't manufacture enough offense to bail out a pitching staff that wasn't nearly as untouchable as the numbers suggested.
Tough miss for The Stable. On to the next one—hopefully with less hubris about "justifying the price."
