Houston's Elite Defense Evaporates in Portland as Timbers Roll 3-1
So much for elite underlying defensive quality. Houston's league-best 1.22 goals-against-per-game got torched at Providence Park, where Portland hung three on the Dynamo in a comfortable 3-1 victory that made our under 3.0 call look foolish by the final whistle.
The Timbers didn't just edge past the total—they blew through it with room to spare, turning what we projected as a grinding, low-event affair into a proper home stomping. Houston's vaunted defensive structure, the one supposedly overperforming its xGA, crumbled against a Portland attack that found its rhythm early and never relented. The Dynamo managed a consolation goal, but this was never in doubt once the hosts found their second.
Our reasoning leaned heavily on Houston's stinginess—1.0 goals-against in their last 15, elite metrics across the board. None of it mattered. Portland's 1.8 goals-for in recent form turned out to be the more reliable indicator, and the home environment clearly tilted the ice further than we anticipated. The market had this at 3.0 with under juice for a reason; we should have respected the Timbers' ability to produce in front of their crowd.
Lesson learned: road defensive form doesn't always travel, especially not to the Pacific Northwest.
