Hurricanes Torch Canucks 6-3, DarkHorse Goalie Thesis Crumbles
The Hurricanes rolled into Vancouver and did exactly what a 7-3 powerhouse should do to a struggling opponent, torching the Canucks 6-3 and making our +240 dog play look foolish in the process. We hung our hat on Leevi Merilainen's .925 save percentage providing the great equalizer against Carolina's offensive firepower, but that thesis died a quick death as the Canes put up six goals and reminded everyone why they're averaging 3.6 per game. Pyotr Kochetkov's supposedly inferior .912 didn't matter when his team controlled play and buried chances.
Vancouver's 1-2 home record should've been a bigger red flag than we treated it. That "functional" 4.33 goals-for at home? Try 3 goals against a team that came to play. The rest edge and home ice meant nothing when Carolina's depth and shot volume—33.1 per game coming in—overwhelmed a Canucks squad that generates just 21 shots nightly.
Sometimes the better team is just better, regardless of price. Carolina justified that -300 tag by doing what elite road teams do: they imposed their will. We chased goaltending splits and rest advantages when we should've respected the talent gap. Lesson learned, wallet lighter.
