Kings Snap Winless Skid, Embarrass Capitals 5-2 in Washington
Well, that's egg on our face. The Kings finally remembered how to play hockey, and naturally it happened right after we faded them into oblivion. Los Angeles stormed into Capital One Arena and dismantled Washington 5-2, snapping their 0-6 nightmare and making our Capitals ML pick look foolish in the process.
The goaltending mismatch we banked on? Completely backwards. Darcy Kuemper—yes, the same netminder sporting that ghastly .847 save percentage—suddenly decided to show up, while Logan Thompson's "solid" .910 crumbled when it mattered. The Kings jumped ahead early and never looked back, potting five goals against a Capitals squad that looked nothing like the 4-1 home juggernaut we sold you on.
Washington's supposed momentum evaporated. Their 4.0 goals-per-game home scoring average became irrelevant as LA's defense—previously a sieve on the road—tightened up exactly when facing elimination from relevance. Sometimes a winless team isn't due for another loss; they're a coiled spring waiting to explode.
Credit where it's due: the Kings were desperate, and desperation beat momentum tonight. Our read on the situational edge was correct—we just backed the wrong desperate team. The market knew something at -155 that we didn't. Lesson learned, moving on.
