Lightning Squeak Past Wild 3-2, DarkHorse Pick Misses the Mark
The Lightning edged the Wild 3-2 at Amalie Arena, handing our desk a frustrating miss on Minnesota at +125. We liked the Wild's early-season metrics—better goals against, better goals for, the whole analytical package. Turns out hockey still requires actually putting the puck in the net when it counts.
Tampa's home magic continued, improving to 3-0 on home ice despite our skepticism about small sample theater. Dennis Hildeby, the goalie we flagged as the weak link with his pedestrian .914 save percentage, apparently decided tonight was his coming-out party. Minnesota's offense, which had been humming at three goals per game, managed just two against a netminder we thought was ripe for exploitation.
Calvin Pickard's .871 save percentage looked even uglier in the loss, though Minnesota's vaunted team defense—the stat we leaned on hardest—kept it close enough to sting. The Wild outshot Tampa in stretches but couldn't capitalize on quality chances, the kind of offensive inefficiency that turns strong underlying numbers into moral victories.
Credit where it's due: Lightning found a way to win tight at home. But this one tastes like highway robbery. Minnesota controlled possession, defended well enough, and still walked away empty. Sometimes the bounce just doesn't bounce your way.
