Mahle Melts Down as Braves Drop Heartbreaker to Phils, 4-3
So much for that pitching advantage. The Braves coughed up a 4-3 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday, and our desk took the L right alongside them at -103. Tyler Mahle, the guy we leaned on with his sparkling 1.99 ERA, apparently forgot how to locate his fastball when it mattered most. Meanwhile, Cristopher Sánchez—the supposedly inferior arm with the 2.91 ERA—went out and did enough to keep Atlanta's bats quiet when they needed to break through.
The Phillies scraped together four runs against Mahle and company, which doesn't sound like much until you remember Philadelphia had been limping into this series averaging 2.4 runs per game over their last five. Turns out a struggling offense can wake up just fine when you serve up mistakes. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber didn't need to go nuclear; they just needed to capitalize on Atlanta's sloppiness.
The Braves managed three runs but couldn't find that clutch hit late. Home field advantage? Didn't show up. Momentum from yesterday's 5-3 win? Evaporated. Sometimes the superior starter on paper becomes the footnote in the box score. That's baseball, and that's why we're 0-1 today. Tough pill to swallow, but we'll be back tomorrow with sharper eyes.
