Mariners Blow Late Lead as A's Walk Off 8-7, DarkHorse Pick Craters

MLB

So much for that 19-1 demolition carrying over. The Mariners coughed up a late lead and stumbled to an 8-7 walk-off loss in Oakland, torching our -145 play in the process.

Bryce Miller's supposed pitching edge? Evaporated. The Mariners built a lead behind their offense—Arozarena and company showed up—but Miller and the bullpen couldn't seal it. Seattle led heading into the late innings, only to watch Oakland's lineup, the same crew that got obliterated 24 hours earlier, claw back and eventually punch through for the walk-off winner in the ninth.

The A's proved that yesterday's humiliation meant nothing. Home field and desperation trumped our ERA and WHIP advantages when it mattered. Jacob Lopez may own a 4.78 ERA, but Oakland's collective effort was enough to outlast a Mariners squad that should've closed this out cleanly.

Our 62-64% true win probability looked solid on paper—pitching differential, offensive edge, season series advantage. But baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheet when the bullpen implodes and the home team finds magic in the ninth. The numbers said Mariners. The scoreboard said otherwise. Sometimes the worse team just wins, and tonight the A's walked it off while we ate the loss at -145.
