Mariners Blow Lead in Oakland, DarkHorse Pick Sinks at -170

MLB

The Athletics flipped the script on our Mariners pick, walking off with a 6-5 win that sent DarkHorse's -170 recommendation straight into the loss column. So much for that George Kirby pitching advantage we banked on.

Seattle looked comfortable early, building a lead that suggested our starter differential thesis might actually hold water. Then Oakland's bats woke up late, and suddenly that 1.84 ERA gap between Kirby and Jeffrey Springs meant absolutely nothing. The A's scratched across enough runs to erase Seattle's cushion and steal one at home, proving once again that depleted rosters and double-digit IL lists don't always translate to easy money.

We leaned hard on Kirby's superiority and Seattle's 4-3 season series edge, dismissing Oakland's home-field pull and the Mariners' brutal road splits as secondary concerns. Turns out those road struggles—2-4 record, 6.17 runs allowed per game away from T-Mobile—weren't just noise. They were a flashing red warning sign we chose to ignore at -170.

The fatigue factor and Seattle's back-to-back scheduling pinch bit harder than expected. Sometimes the obvious contrarian angle is obvious for a reason. Oakland cashed as home dogs, and we're left holding a losing ticket that never should've been laid at that price.
