Mariners Drop Heartbreaker in Arlington Despite Miller's Dominance, DarkHorse Pick Falls Short

MLB

The Rangers squeezed out a 5-4 win over Seattle in a game that had our pitching-edge thesis written all over it—until the ninth inning decided to get interesting. Bryce Miller delivered exactly what we projected, carving through Texas's lineup with that sub-2.30 ERA stuff, while MacKenzie Gore looked every bit the 4.80 ERA liability we expected. The Mariners built their lead behind Miller's excellence, and for eight innings, this pick was cruising toward an easy cash.

Then the wheels came off. Seattle's bullpen—always an adventure—coughed up the lead late, and the Rangers scratched across the winning run to flip a game they had no business winning based on starting pitching matchups. Our handicap was sound: Miller outdueled Gore by a country mile, and the Mariners controlled this game exactly how we envisioned. But baseball's a nine-inning sport, and bullpens don't read scouting reports.

The road struggles (now 1-6 away) finally caught up with Seattle in the cruelest fashion. When you're backing the better starter at reasonable juice, you expect to survive the occasional bullpen hiccup. Tonight, we didn't. Sometimes you lose the right way—this was one of those nights.
