Mariners Edge Cubs in Nail-Biter, Hancock Shines as DarkHorse Pick Falls Short

MLB

The Mariners squeezed past the Cubs 6-5 in a game that validated our concerns about Emerson Hancock while exposing the razor-thin margins in baseball. Hancock delivered exactly what we warned about—the kid is legit, carving through a Cubs lineup that entered hot but couldn't consistently solve his arsenal. Seattle's offense, dormant for weeks at 3.07 runs per game over their last 15, found just enough juice to scratch across six runs against Matthew Boyd and the Cubs' bullpen.

Here's the brutal truth: we backed Chicago's momentum and superior lineup depth, and they showed up offensively with five runs—more than Seattle's recent average. But baseball doesn't grade on a curve. The Mariners' compromised bullpen, supposedly a liability with Munoz day-to-day and multiple arms on the IL, held when it mattered. The Cubs' vaunted .750+ team OPS and Pete Crow-Armstrong's .93 OPS couldn't manufacture the one extra run needed.

At -110, this was always a coin flip disguised as an edge. We leaned into Chicago's form over Seattle's pitching, and Hancock made us pay. Sometimes the best arm on the mound trumps everything else. The pick missed, the Mariners cashed, and we move on. That's baseball.
