Memphis Unbeaten, Philly's Defense Real, and Houston's Offense Scary Good
The Grizzlies sit alone at 6-0, and this isn't smoke and mirrors—Memphis boasts a staggering +14.7 net rating anchored by a suffocating 103.0 defensive mark. They're forcing opponents into bad shots and converting on the other end at 117.7 per 100. Until someone proves they can crack that defense, the Grizz are the league's undisputed alpha.
Philadelphia at 6-1 deserves more respect than the casual fan is giving them. That 102.4 defensive rating is elite, even if the offense (106.2) looks pedestrian. The Sixers are grinding out wins the old-fashioned way, and bettors sleeping on their consistency will pay for it. Houston's 6-1 start is equally legitimate—120.6 offensive rating is video-game stuff, though that 108.1 on defense suggests they'll need shootouts to stay hot.
Boston and Detroit round out the top five, both at 5-1, and both passing the eye test. The Celtics' +11.2 net rating screams contender, while Detroit's 102.1 defensive efficiency is a pleasant surprise for a franchise that's been rebuilding since the Obama administration.
Now for the frauds: the Lakers at 5-2 are living dangerously with a 114.6 defensive rating that ranks among the league's worst. Their +3.5 net is barely above water, and that offense won't bail them out every night. Meanwhile, Minnesota at 4-3 has a sparkling +10.7 net rating that suggests they're better than their record—keep an eye on the Wolves as buy-low candidates.
At the bottom, Sacramento is a legitimate disaster at 0-6 with a ghastly -18.1 net rating and a 121.9 defensive mark that would embarrass a rec league. The Kings aren't just bad—they're historically porous. Milwaukee at 1-5 with a 120.2 defensive rating isn't far behind. Championship hangover or roster rot? Either way, fade them until further notice.
