Mets Snatch Victory Despite Stock's Shoulder Concerns

MLB

The Mets pulled off a 4-2 upset over the Padres at Citi Field, handing DarkHorse's model a frustrating loss on what looked like a slam-dunk pitching mismatch. We backed San Diego at -135, banking on Michael King's 3.16 ERA advantage over Robert Stock, who somehow took the mound despite needing shoulder surgery. Turns out injured shoulders and questionable medical clearances don't matter when your offense actually shows up.

King wasn't bad, but he wasn't dominant enough to overcome the Padres' bats going silent when it mattered. Meanwhile, Stock gutted through whatever's wrong with that shoulder and kept San Diego's "competent offense" – featuring Campusano's .91 OPS and France's .86 OPS – from doing much damage. The Mets manufactured just enough run support to make the difference, turning a 3.16 ERA gap into irrelevant trivia.

This is baseball in its purest, most infuriating form: the right side of the math losing to the wrong side of execution. The Padres had every statistical advantage walking into Queens and left with nothing but a loss. Sometimes the guy who shouldn't win does anyway. That's why we play the games, and why we'll be back tomorrow looking for revenge.
