Mets Steal One in Tampa, Edge Rays 3-2 in Tight Pitching Duel

MLB

The Mets scratched out a 3-2 victory at Tropicana Field Tuesday night, grinding through nine innings of the kind of baseball that makes pitching coaches smile and offensive coordinators reach for the Tums. This wasn't pretty, but New York will cash the W and move on.

Both clubs struggled to string hits together, turning this into a war of attrition decided by whoever could manufacture just enough offense. The Mets managed exactly that, pushing across three runs while their pitching staff locked down Tampa Bay's lineup when it mattered most. The Rays scratched two across but couldn't deliver the clutch hit late, stranding runners in scoring position and letting a winnable game slip away.

Credit New York's bullpen for slamming the door when Tampa threatened. The Rays had their chances but came up empty in the critical moments, a theme that's becoming all too familiar at the Trop this season.

DarkHorse stayed off this one entirely, and honestly, smart move. Low-scoring divisional games between inconsistent clubs are coin flips dressed up as baseball games. The Mets got the bounce they needed, the Rays didn't, and that's your ballgame. Nothing more, nothing less.
