Minnesota's Road Woes Continue in Wild 9-Goal Portland Shootout

MLS

Well, that xG regression theory looked brilliant right up until Portland remembered they had a home crowd and Minnesota's defense decided to take the night off. The Timbers edged the Loons 5-4 in an absolute barnburner that made our +200 value play look more like a donation to the sportsbook.

Minnesota's underlying numbers suggested they were due for positive variance, and to be fair, they did bang in four goals on the road—a respectable haul in any universe. The problem? Portland's decimated squad, missing 11 players including key attackers, somehow found enough firepower to put five past a Minnesota backline that clearly missed the defensive assignment memo. So much for that 1.33 goals against average away from home.

The Loons won the season series meeting 2-0, but playoff football is a different animal, and Providence Park turned into a shooting gallery neither defense could control. Minnesota's attack showed up exactly as predicted—four goals proves the offensive talent was there—but when you're leaking five at the other end, all the xG models in the world won't save you.

Credit to Portland for surviving their injury crisis with goals. Our pick crashes and burns, but what a way to go down—in a track meet that neither team's defensive coordinator will want to rewatch.
