Nationals Edge Marlins 5-4, DarkHorse Backs Wrong Horse in D.C.

MLB

The Nationals squeaked out a 5-4 win over Miami on Saturday, handing DarkHorse AI a rare miss on what looked like a layup Marlins ML pick. So much for that 8-0 season dominance and superior pitching matchup—Washington finally decided to show up at home.

Sandy Alcantara came in with the better résumé and track record, but baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheet when the other guy executes. Cade Cavalli matched him pitch-for-pitch, and the Nationals' bats—dormant for most of the month—woke up just enough to scratch across five runs. Miami's offense, expected to cruise against Washington's porous 4.69 team ERA, managed only four. That'll lose you ballgames, especially when you're getting plus-money as the road favorite.

The loss snaps Miami's psychological stranglehold on this matchup and exposes a harsh truth: recent dominance means nothing if you can't finish. Washington's 3-7 slide in their last ten? Apparently over, at least for one night. The Nationals needed this badly, and they took it.

DarkHorse's reasoning wasn't flawed—the Marlins *were* the better team on paper. But paper doesn't play nine innings. Sometimes the dog bites back, and today it did. Tough beat, but that's baseball.
