New England's xG Edge Evaporates in BMO Field Collapse

MLS

So much for underlying metrics. Toronto FC pulled off a 2-1 upset at home, handing DarkHorse's New England Revolution +0.5 pick a frustrating loss and exposing the Revs' road fragility when it mattered most.

We backed New England on superior expected goals data and Toronto's woeful form—winless in 10, missing key attackers, the works. The numbers said the Revs were the better side, and honestly, they might still be. But soccer is played on grass, not spreadsheets, and Toronto's finishing woes magically vanished for 90 minutes. That brutal -6.17 goals-versus-xG deficit? Turns out variance cuts both ways. TFC found the net twice against a New England defense that had been stingy all season (1.28 goals against per game), while the Revs managed just one reply despite their inflated +10.91 goals-versus-xG suggesting they'd been clinical.

The +0.5 cushion was supposed to eliminate draw risk and capture value on the away side. Instead, we got outright defeat. New England's xG profile still paints them as the superior outfit, but road performances are where theory meets reality, and the Revolution failed that test. Toronto's injury-depleted attack somehow conjured enough to win, and our pick gets filed under "right process, wrong result." Frustrating, but that's the game.
