Nola Shuts the Door, DarkHorse Eats Crow on Mets Fade

MLB

The Phillies blanked the Mets 3-0 in Queens, and our desk looks foolish for backing New York at -140. Aaron Nola, the guy we labeled "hittable" with his 4.69 ERA, went out and carved up the Mets lineup like it owed him money, silencing bats that were supposed to feast on mediocrity. Meanwhile, Nolan McLean—the "genuinely elite arm" we hung our hat on—got touched up just enough to surrender three runs, and the Mets offense did absolutely nothing to bail him out. Zero runs. Zero excuses.

We leaned hard on McLean's sub-3.50 ERA and strikeout stuff, convinced the Phillies' middling offense would wilt. Instead, Schwarber and Harper—the top-of-order thunder we acknowledged but underweighted—did exactly what elite bats do: they punished mistakes and set the tone. Philadelphia's lineup, supposedly struggling at under four runs per game, found a way to scratch across three, and that was more than enough behind Nola's gem.

The Mets' four-game skid is now five, their home woes are real, and we missed the forest for the trees. Sometimes the better team just wins, and the starter ERA gap we obsessed over meant nothing when one guy showed up and the other's lineup stayed asleep. Tough loss. Move on.
