Oettinger's Magic Runs Out as Avalanche Steal One in Dallas

NHL

So much for goaltending edges. The Avalanche walked into American Airlines Center and snatched a 3-2 victory despite Jake Oettinger doing everything short of building a brick wall in the crease. We backed the Stars at -105 banking on Oettinger's absurd .963 save percentage and that vaunted Dallas defensive structure—and yeah, both showed up. Problem is, Mackenzie Blackwood apparently didn't get the memo about his struggling .867 mark.

Colorado's netminder stood tall when it mattered, and the Avs found just enough offensive execution to overcome the exact matchup disadvantage we highlighted. Dallas generated chances but couldn't solve Blackwood often enough, while Colorado's speed created quality looks that turned Oettinger's elite numbers into a footnote. The Stars' 1.4 goals-against average looked great on paper; less great when you're staring at a one-goal deficit after sixty minutes.

This one stings because the thesis wasn't wrong—Oettinger was spectacular, the defensive structure held—but hockey's a cruel mistress when the other goalie decides to play out of his mind too. Sometimes the better story wins. Tonight, that was Colorado playing road spoiler while we're left holding a losing ticket and a lesson in variance.
