Oilers Erase Cushion in Wild 9-7 Barn-Burner, DarkHorse Pick Sinks
So much for the cushion. The Oilers torched Vancouver 9-7 in a game that made beer-league defense look structured, and our Canucks +1.5 never had a prayer. We leaned on back-to-back fatigue and home-ice sentiment after Vancouver's opening-night win, banking on that spread to survive the chaos of a skeleton-crew roster showdown. Instead, Edmonton's offense went supernova and turned Rogers Arena into a shooting gallery.
The final margin says it all—two goals is exactly one more than we needed, and in a track meet like this, that's an eternity. Both teams were missing key pieces, both goaltending situations were compromised, and we knew variance would run hot. What we didn't account for was the Oilers' ability to outscore every mistake, every odd-man rush, every defensive breakdown that plagued both sides. Vancouver kept it close enough to tease, pushing across seven of their own, but when you're giving up nine, the +1.5 is just window dressing.
Coin-flip matchup, coin-flip result—except the coin landed on the wrong side of our number. Brutal miss, no sugar-coating it. Sixteen combined goals and we still couldn't catch a break.
