Padres Can't Cash the Pitching Edge as Reds Squeak Out 4-3 Win

MLB

The Padres had every reason to run away with this one — Randy Vásquez sporting a 1.22 ERA advantage over a just-off-the-IL Nick Lodolo, a 3-1 season series lead, and fresh momentum from yesterday's 5-0 shutout. Instead, they limped home with a 4-3 loss and left our -145 ticket in the shredder.

Lodolo, finger blister and all, didn't implode like the numbers suggested he might. Meanwhile, Vásquez's supposed edge evaporated in the Great American Ball Park humidity. The Padres scratched across three runs but couldn't solve Cincinnati's patchwork bullpen down the stretch, and the Reds capitalized on just enough mistakes to plate four. No heroics, no late-inning drama — just a workmanlike win for the home side that had no business being competitive on paper.

This one stings because the logic was sound: better starter, better form, better head-to-head history. But baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheet when a team decides to show up at home. The Padres' bats went quiet when it mattered, and that 59.2% implied probability felt more like a coin flip by the ninth inning. Tough break, but that's why they play the damn games.
