Padres Pummel Nationals 9-2, DarkHorse Bet Gets Steamrolled

MLB

Well, that was ugly. The Padres didn't just cover the runline—they obliterated it, turning Petco Park into a launching pad and sending our Nationals +1.5 ticket straight to the shredder. Final score: 9-2, San Diego. We missed, and it wasn't even close.

Our handicap leaned on Walker Buehler's mediocrity and Washington's scrappy lineup to keep this within a run. Instead, Buehler looked like vintage October Buehler while Jackson Kent pitched like a guy with a 5.55 ERA should—poorly. The Padres' bats, supposedly "inconsistent" at 3.6 runs per game over their last 15, decided tonight was the night to wake up and pile on. San Diego scored early, scored often, and never let the Nationals sniff competitiveness.

James Wood and CJ Abrams, the offensive bright spots we cited? Silent. The Nationals managed just two runs and looked overmatched from the jump. Meanwhile, the Padres reminded everyone why they're 6-3 at home—when they click, they steamroll.

League-wide trends about away dogs covering 60% of the time mean nothing when your starter can't find the zone and the opponent's lineup is locked in. Sometimes the worse team just loses badly. Tonight was one of those nights. Tip your cap, cash the L, and move on.
