Padres Push Braves to the Brink, Cover as Sale Survives Scare

MLB

The Padres lost 6-5 at Truist Park, but DarkHorse's Padres +1.5 cashed with room to spare in a game that played out exactly as projected. Chris Sale was elite as advertised, but San Diego's offense made him work and kept this a one-run nail-biter deep into the night.

Griffin Canning got shelled early, because of course he did—6.67 ERA pitchers don't suddenly find their command against a lineup this good. The Braves jumped ahead, but the Padres clawed back repeatedly, with their hot bats (that .92 OPS from Campusano wasn't theoretical) keeping constant pressure on Atlanta's taxed bullpen. The stretched relief corps we flagged? Yeah, they sweated through every high-leverage spot, nearly coughing up the lead multiple times.

Sale did his job through six, but once he exited, the Braves' undermanned pen had to navigate three innings against a Padres offense that's been averaging over eight runs per game. They held on by their fingernails, but a one-run margin was always the danger zone here. The market called this a coinflip; we took the points and watched San Diego do exactly what road dogs do when facing elite starters with exploitable bullpens behind them—they hang around and make you earn it. Easy cover, exactly as drawn up.
