Penguins Stumble in Columbus, Drop Tight One to Blue Jackets 3-2
The Penguins rolled into Nationwide Arena and left with nothing but regret, falling 3-2 to a Blue Jackets squad that had no business winning this one on paper. Columbus found a way to scratch out the victory in what became a tighter defensive battle than anyone expected.
Pittsburgh controlled stretches of play but couldn't solve Columbus goaltending when it mattered most. The Jackets capitalized on their limited chances and played a disciplined defensive game that frustrated the Penguins' offensive weapons all night. Every time Pittsburgh pushed, Columbus had an answer.
The difference came down to execution in critical moments. The Blue Jackets converted their opportunities while the Penguins left goals on the table. You can't afford to be wasteful against motivated home underdogs, and Pittsburgh learned that lesson the hard way.
This loss stings because it was absolutely winnable. The Penguins outplayed Columbus for long stretches but couldn't find that third goal. Hockey's a cruel game sometimes—dominate possession, lose the scoreboard. That's exactly what happened here.
DarkHorse didn't publish a pick on this one, which in hindsight was the smart play. These divisional road games are coin flips, and tonight the coin landed wrong for Pittsburgh. On to the next.
